Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
About five months. We opened on November 5th, 2018.
What is your primary product or service?
Therapeutic Massage.
Our specialty, which continues to earn rave reviews, is a combination of Deep Tissue Massage and Thai-Style Massage with complimentary Hot Stones. One of the high-points is when the Massage Therapist climbs up on the table and walks up and down your back!
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My wife, Yaya, (who's Thai by the way. A naturalized US citizen, who lives eats and breathes Thai culture and the Thai way of life) earned her California Massage Certification in May of 2014, and was constantly pushing me to open our own business and stop working for somebody else.
I was a Field Service Engineer on H-60 helicopters for the US Navy for 17 years, and then on the MQ-9 Unmanned Aircraft for the British and French Air Forces. I traveled the world in both jobs. I was eventually ready to settle back down in San Diego, my home town.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our facility is new, bright, white and clean almost to the point of being clinical. You can look right into our shop from the sidewalk outside (but not into the individual therapy rooms) - as opposed to the nearby Thai massage businesses which are typically dimly lit, even secretive, and any windows to outside have long since been darkened.
Also, we do therapeutic massage and we do it very well. Take a look at our on-line reviews.
We don't do Reiki. Or Cupping, or Reflexalogy, or Chrystals, or Chakras, or Auras, or "energy work", or Oracle Stones Those things are all quackery with no basis in science or modern medicine.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have just the one establishment right now. It's mildly lunatic to think of expanding when we just opened last November, less than five months ago. Still, my wife (who's also co-owner and my business partner) mentions a second location every now and then. She's definitely an empire builder. Maybe in a year or so.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Exiting Highway 94 West-bound into downtown San Diego, the lane you were in becomes F street, a one-way street which heads West into downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter from the East Village where the freeway ended.
Stay on F street until you reach 5th Avenue. Then turn right into the left lane of two lane, one-way 5th Avenue headed North.
After you pass under the traffic signal at 5th and E, slow-down and look for parking.
Gaslamp Thai Massage Therapy is at 946 5th Avenue. It's on your left, about midway between E street and Broadway. Look for the colorful 4-foot logo of a Thai lady with Thai-style praying hands in our big show window.
What type of payments do you accept?
We currently accept every form of payment except for crypto-currency.
Nobody has asked to pay with a personal check yet, but I'll accept it - until given a reason not to.
Which areas do you service?
Interesting question.
It really depends on how you look at it. I would say "Greater San Diego." Downtown, East Village, the Gaslamp, City Heights, Lemon Grove, La Mesa, National City, Chula Vista, Del Mar... Alpine, sure. Absolutely. If a person from Pine Valley came in to our shop, I'm not going to tell them "I'd like to help you, but you're outside our service area."
We've had more than one REPEAT customer from Australia. We've had customers from Singapore and Argentina. Do we service Singapore, Australia and Argentina? Sure.
It's important to note that our customers come to us. We never do out-calls. Never.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Gaslamp Thai Massage Therapy, LLC has five owner/partners. In addition to myself and Yaya, there are a husband and wife in Massachusetts, who together own 15% of the LLC. My wife and I have known them since the late 90's when we all lived in Yokohama, Japan. And we have one additional partner living in Chula Vista. She owns 25% of the LLC. We really have the best partners. Rather than lurking in the background, or hovering over our shoulders, they trust that Yaya and I know best how to operate our business, and that we do so with the best interests of all LLC owners always in mind.
I'm Co-Owner & Business Manager. Yaya is Co-Owner & Operations Manager.
I man the reception counter most of the time, and handle the business administration. Yaya manages the hiring and scheduling of our Certified Massage Therapists.
What are your hours of operation?
We're open 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day. Earlier by appointment.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"Thank you! I feel so much better!"
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
John Donne in the Olde English -
"No man is an iland, intire of itselfe;
every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine.
if clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse,
as well as if a Promontorie were,
as well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine owne were;
every man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde;
And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee."
