Modern Dance Company and School
Founded by John Malashock in 1988, after a distinguished performing career with Twyla Tharp Dance, Malashock Dance is recognized for its signature style of dynamic and emotionally charged choreography. The company is also recognized for its sumptuous collaborative projects with composers, playwrights, artists and other arts organizations, including KPBS-TV, San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Music Society, Old Globe Theatre, and Museum of Photographic Arts. The most recent collaboration between choreographer John Malashock and Persian composer Shahrokh Yadegari, Stay The Hand, enjoyed World Premiere performances in San Diego April 4-13, 2008.
Malashock Dance is also known for its groundbreaking work in the Dance Film genre, choreography specifically for the camera. John Malashock has received four Emmy Awards for projects which have aired on KPBS-TV (Public Broadcast of San Diego) and thirty PBS affiliate stations nationwide, and have been screened at international film festivals.
The Malashock Dance School was founded in January 2007 and offers classes and workshops for children and adults, from beginning to professional level. The Education Outreach and Scholarship Programs of Malashock Dance have served over 35,000 students since 1990 and include "Emotion in Motion," Malashock’s signature outreach program for San Diego 5th graders; plus numerous in-school and after-school programs offered throughout San Diego.
